Shrubby, branched, with predominantly erect segments, 0.5 -0.9m tall; segments elongate-ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, 10-20 cm long, 4-8 cm broad, 0.5-2.0 cm thick, dark green; segments of seedlings or young offsets almost round in outline with bristly spination; areoles 1.2-1.8 cm distant, on slightly raised podaria, c. 3 mm diam., with scant to pronounced pale ochre-greyish short wool and dirty whitish glochids; areoles of old segments sometimes enlarged and more woolly; spines 3-5, +/- spreading in all directions, 1.5-6.3 cm long, to 1.5mm diameter, ash-grey with tip yellowish to yellowish-brown; sometimes 1-3 additional short spines 1-8mm long; rarely only with short spines or spines missing (this condition characteristic for the Rui Barbosa population). Flowers (2 flowers observed only) near apex of segments, commonly on the edge, less frequently also from the sides; erect, rigidly fleshy, 3.5-5.0 cm long; pericarpel c. 2.8 cm long, to 2.0 cm diam., medium to dark green with raised elongate podaria with copious glochids and some wool, normally spineless; outermost perianth-segments succulent, erect, dark red, other perianth-segments hardly thickened, erect or slightly reclining, bright red and very slightly glossy; stamens very numerous, erect and slightly inclinded towards the style, outer series sterile without anther rudiment, next series sterile with rudimentary anther; filaments glabrous, basally pale orange-yellow, orange above; style inverse narrowly club-shaped, rather massive, glabrous, basally pale yellowish, pale to golden yellow above; stigma 4-partite, white, finely papillate. Fruits elongate-ovoid, erect, 4-5.5 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm diam., with narrow deeply sunken navel, without raised podaria, pale greenish-white to white, wall thick, pale green and mucilaginous in cross-section; seed cavity tightly packed with pulp and seeds, pulp solid, pale greenish and mucilaginous before ripening, becoming juicy and appearing pale pinkish due to pinkish coloring of placenta and arilli. Seeds c. 3 x 3.5mm, almost round, smooth, pale ochre, with a clear but not very prominent 'Ringwulst'. Found on ege of granite/gneiss outcrops between 100-650 meters.
